Seizures in Dogs & Cats

Involuntary muscle activity caused by abnormal brain electrical activity. Can range from focal twitching to full-body convulsions.

Common Causes

  • Epilepsy
  • Toxin ingestion
  • Brain tumor
  • Liver disease
  • Low blood sugar
  • Infection

Red Flags

  • Seizure lasting >3 minutes (status epilepticus)
  • Multiple seizures in 24 hours
  • First seizure in pet >6 years old
  • Seizure after known toxin exposure
  • No recovery between seizures

When to See a Vet

After any first seizure, or immediately if a seizure lasts more than 3 minutes or clusters occur.
